Lake Pend Oreille

Midnight moon, Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho, Labor Day weekend, 2022.
Morning, after the tent was put away
Driving, out of Idaho, into Montana

I was wearing: The Fanny Pack no.2 in Shredded Wheat while we rode a side by side, into the woods, to the top of a bluff, to see the stars, who were not very visible because of the fire smoke that made this red midnight moon. I was raised in a culture that threatened with phrases like, When the moon goes down in blood.
I left that life long ago but I do believe the moon to be a truth teller. This is my first time living in a place where the moon reflects, so viscerally, what is happening immediately in front of us, showing the light from eons away while also reflecting the right here and now. Past and present, all at once.
