Las Vegas

Hello Tuesday! I’ve been feeling overwhelmed by the chaos in the world around us, not knowing how best to contribute and feeling frustrated by comments like “our hearts and prayers are with you” because while the feeling of empathy may be real, it also feels a bit lazy and more like a public pat on the back and does not do anything to actually help. Las Vegas yesterday is heart-wrenching. Puerto Rico, Mexico, Houston, Florida, the Carribean…all heartbreaking. I have not commented publicly on any of this because I feel so helpless. I think the statement made by Trevor Noah on Monday’s "The Daily Show" was a heartfelt comment on all of the tragedy and the lack of competence in a government that should have more to say than wielding attacks on the victims of all of these disasters.
I would love to be in the position to donate all of our profits to organizations who try to help in these times but, I am not always in a place to be able to do that. Moop employs a handful of people who rely wholly on their jobs here. We are working class makers of the very best bags. This year I started offering full health insurance coverage to all of our full-time employees. That was a huge expense to take on. Next year I hope we can start to offer some retirement offerings. I’ve been building and building this business in the scrappiest of ways, reinvesting all of my time and profits back into the business with not much left over. Maybe I’m feeling defensive but, I just want to point out that silence or lack of donations does not always come from a place of selfishness, often it is helplessness. There just is not always something extra to be able to donate. But, here is something small I can do. Our Seconds Sale is wrapping up today and we are donating 10% of the profits from today’s sales to @directreleif -one of the highest rated ethical charity organizations providing help to those most in need during times of disaster. And, please, let’s all stay engaged, stay informed and stay empathetic. We need more caring of those around us. A heavy note to start the day, I know...thanks for listening❤️
